Gen Narumi is the seventh captain of the First Division of the Defense Force and is widely recognized as “Japan’s Strongest Anti-Kaiju Combatant.” He also mentors Kikoru Shinomiya. Gen is one of the main protagonists of Kaiju No. 8: B-Side, a spin-off series of Kaiju No. 8.

Gen is a tall, athletic young man with a lean yet muscular build. His hair is naturally black, but he dyed the front section grey to give it a two-toned color. This allows him to switch between a black bob with hints of grey (when off-duty) and slicked back, revealing the majority of his grey hair (mostly during combat). He has sharp red eyes (magenta in the anime and when using RT-0001) and very short, thick eyebrows.

As a teenage officer in the First Division, Gen was shorter and lankier but sported the same signature hairstyle. As a Defense Force captain, he wears the standard combat suit with a respirator mask and his personal weapon. Before his missions, he also dons a black trench coat. When wearing Numbers Weapon 1, Gen dons a dark grey armored combat suit with Izumo Tech’s logo on the shoulder pads and the 001 insignia on the chest. The suit also includes a black and grey jacket.

Despite appearing serious, Gen hides a lazy and childish personality, overreacting when slightly annoyed. His unprofessional demeanor often leads him to prioritize futile things over work, like video games and action figures or his followers on social media. However, once he arrives on the battlefield, his attitude changes radically, becoming very serious and dedicated to his work as captain, giving specific orders to his subordinates.

Gen is informal and rude when confronting others, casually speaking up to director general Isao Shinomiya and getting mad at Eiji Hasegawa whenever he is scolded. He values skills above all else and demands results from anyone serving in his division. Despite his childish and superficial behavior, Gen is still held in high regard by many people close to him, with Director General Isao entrusting him with the safety of the Defense Force and the entire country.

Like most members of the First Division, Gen has a strong rivalry with the Third Division, specifically with vice-captain Soshiro Hoshina, who often teases him in front of his subordinates, leading to verbal arguments.

Powers & Abilities

Overall Abilities: Gen is the captain of the First Division, the strongest division, and is known as “Japan’s Strongest Anti-Kaiju Combatant.” Although he holds this title, Gen was never able to beat his former mentor, Isao Shinomiya. Isao recognized that Gen’s skill level would surpass his own and kept up his training non-stop to continue being a “wall” for Gen to overcome one day.

During his battle against Kaiju No. 9’s Beta duplicate, Gen easily defeated the daikaiju’s clone once he got serious and was able to fight on par with No. 9’s main body alongside Kafka Hibino after it absorbed Kaiju No. 2’s power. While initially at a disadvantage against Kaiju No. 11 due to not being able to read the movements of its water-based attacks, after being taunted by No. 11, Gen reveals that he evolved his RT-0001 weapon, allowing him to gain the upper hand and defeat the monster.

Even before joining the Defense Force, Gen possessed the unique ability to draw power from kaiju tissue and weaponize the severed limb of a dead kaiju effortlessly. His instincts, speed, and reflexes were great enough to avoid an attack and sever one of the kaiju’s limbs before it could react.

Foresight: After awakening RT-0001 in his eyes through unknown means, Gen can see the brain impulses through living beings’ bodies, allowing him to predict when and where an enemy is going to strike, making his attacks “inescapable.” This power is further enhanced when he wears the Numbers Weapon 1 combat suit. However, he cannot predict the movements of non-organic objects like water. After years of training, Gen evolved his RT-0001 weapon, now capable of perceiving the movements of electrons, temperature fluctuations, the terrain, and every detail of a location through the eyes all around his Numbers Weapon 1 combat suit, making it possible for him to predict what happens via a clear mental vision.

High Unleashed Combat Power: As a Defense Force captain, Gen is capable of using a high amount of his combat suit’s power. His maximum unleashed combat power in a normal Defense Force combat suit is 98%.

Enhanced Strength: Gen has incredible physical strength; he can swing his large bayonet around in combat with dexterity and slice through a daikaiju’s tough skin with ease.
Immense Speed and Reflexes:Gen is extremely fast; his speed is so great that his attacks become “inescapable” when he uses RT-0001, and he can outrun Kafka Hibino in his kaiju form. He can even close the gap between him and his opponent in an instant to catch them off guard and deliver a devastating blow. His reflexes are also top-notch, capable of dodging Kaiju No. 9’s high-speed attacks.
Enhanced Durability: Gen is incredibly resilient, emerging completely unscathed from a powerful attack from Kaiju No. 9. Even after No. 9 absorbed Kaiju No. 2’s power, he only received minor injuries during the fight. In his battle against Kaiju No. 11, Gen only received moderate injuries from its water-based attacks.
Immense Endurance: Gen possesses tremendous levels of physical endurance and stamina. After fifteen minutes of a full release with Numbers Weapon 1 and even close to overheating, Gen endures multiple water-based attacks from Kaiju No. 11 as well as a powerful blow from the monster itself, receiving major injuries and still being able to battle. Despite severe injuries, Gen continues battling.

Abilities:

Bayonet Mastery: Gen is extremely skilled at using his bayonet to kill kaiju, defeating a large honju-level kaiju with a fortitude level of 7.2 by himself with great ease. He uses the blade to slash and sear through a kaiju’s body, making it difficult for them to regenerate, and is a master marksman, capable of shooting his enemies with deadly accuracy and precision. He also uses his bayonet as a shield to defend himself from attacks.

Martial Arts Mastery: Gen has been an incredibly skilled athlete and martial artist since childhood. After joining the Defense Force, he was trained by Isao Shinomiya in different forms of combat such as hand-to-hand, swordsmanship, and sharpshooting. His close-quarters fighting ability is said to rival Soshiro Hoshina, “The Defense Force’s Strongest Close-Quarters Combatant.”
Leadership Skills: As a captain, Gen has shown excellent leadership skills on the battlefield despite his lazy and childish personality, giving orders to his division with absolute authority.
Keen Intellect: Gen is very intelligent despite his childish and eccentric nature. He received high academic scores in school as a teenager and in the Defense Force, putting him at the top of his class. During a major crisis, he manages to think clearly to gain major insight on the battlefield and the enemy’s movements.

Fighting Style:

Gen’s fighting style is named Squadron-Style Bayonet Technique. He uses his bayonet to stab kaiju with tremendous force or to slash and shoot his enemies simultaneously in waves.

Number One: Eruption Slash: Gen attacks his enemy with many frontal slashes and gunshots at the same time.
Number Two: Slash Salvo: Gen dashes past his enemy at extremely high speeds while simultaneously slashing and shooting them.
Number Three: Thunder Fire
Number Four: Flame Shower
Number Five: Sky Turner
Number Six: Seven-Branched Sword: Presumably his strongest attack; Gen slashes his enemy in a manner that branches off in seven different directions, resembling the Seven-Branched Sword while causing explosions in their path. This attack is so powerful that it extends upwards into the sky, surpassing the height of the surrounding buildings.

Equipment

Combat Suit (formerly): On the battlefield, Gen wears a normal Defense Force combat suit.

Gas Mask: Gen’s combat suit includes a full-face gas mask.

Bayonet: Marked GS-3305 and provided by Izumo Tech, Gen’s personal weapon is a large double-bladed bayonet attached to a rifle.

Respirator Mask: Gen wears a respirator mask in combat.

Numbers Weapon 1: Gen’s personal Numbers Weapon, provided by Izumo Tech, is a special combat suit crafted from the corpse of Kaiju No. 1, making it the oldest Numbers Weapon in the Japan Defense Force. This suit, with dark grey armor-like texture and a black and grey jacket, has multiple eyes imbued into it, allowing him to predict the movements of more than one target by reading the electrical signals within the body.

Outer-Shell Light Spectacles: Marked RT-0001 and provided by Izumo Tech, Gen’s second personal weapon is a pair of outer-shell light spectacles made from the retina of Kaiju No. 1. This weapon gives him the ability to visualize the brain signals of a living being and predict their movements before they make them. Repeated usage of this weapon causes his eyes to bleed. During his fight against Kaiju No. 11, Gen revealed that he evolved his RT-0001 weapon to perceive the movements of electrons, temperature fluctuations, the terrain, and every detail of a location with the eyes around his body, making it possible to predict what happens
