The New York Jets have officially parted ways with head coach Robert Saleh following a lackluster start to the season, marking his fourth year at the helm with a record of 20-36. This decision comes amid high expectations for the team, especially with quarterback Aaron Rodgers returning from injury.
The announcement was confirmed by a source familiar with the situation, making Saleh the third NFL coach to be dismissed after a loss in London. Previously, Dennis Allen was let go by the Raiders in 2014 after a defeat to the Miami Dolphins at Wembley Stadium, and Joe Philbin was fired by the Dolphins in 2015 following a loss to the Jets in the same venue. Saleh’s firing comes just two days after the Jets suffered a 23-17 defeat to the Minnesota Vikings at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Entering the 2024 season, the Jets hoped to capitalize on Rodgers’ return after his Achilles injury curtailed his 2023 season just four plays in. However, the team has faced significant struggles on the offensive side of the ball.
During Saleh’s tenure, the Jets cycled through six different quarterbacks: Zach Wilson (33 games), Mike White (7), Rodgers (6), Joe Flacco (5), Trevor Siemian (3), and Tim Boyle (2). This instability at the quarterback position has plagued the team, overshadowing Saleh’s efforts to build a strong defense.
In his first season, the Jets selected Wilson as the No. 2 overall pick, but he faced considerable challenges and was ultimately benched. The arrival of Rodgers was seen as a turning point, but his injury has left the team searching for consistency and success.
