Mina Ashiro is the Captain of the Third Division of the Defense Force and Kafka Hibino’s childhood friend. She is a striking young woman with waist-length black hair styled into a ponytail, accented with a barrette, and big dark-orange eyes with a mole under each. Her athletic physique complements her serious demeanor. Beneath her uniform, she has a small scar on the left side of her upper chest.

At 18, Mina had shorter hair styled in a bob cut. Nowadays, she usually wears the Defense Force combat suit and a white visor that enhances her vision. In battle, she wields firearms and her personal cannon. Mina is a dedicated and determined woman, taking her role in the Defense Force very seriously. She strives to uphold a childhood promise to defeat every kaiju, dedicating herself entirely to kaiju fighting. Despite her professional demeanor, she has a soft spot for Kafka. Though she was upset with him for not keeping his promise to stand by her side, she fondly remembers their friendship and wishes to see him succeed in the Defense Force, even after learning he was Kaiju No. 8.

Beneath her tough exterior, Mina is a caring person who works hard to ensure no one gets injured in a fight. She is grateful to her subordinates, often praising them for their help and acknowledging their worth. However, this also contributes to her deep-seated fear of failure. She believes any mistake would invalidate her comrades’ sacrifices and violate the civilians’ trust in her. Although unhealthy, this mindset drives her to perform exceptionally well in battle.

As the Third Division Captain, Mina is known as the strongest female captain in the Defense Force, having neutralized hundreds of kaiju in her career. She can easily overpower giant kaiju with just a few shots. According to Director General Keiji Itami, Mina is stronger than Gen Narumi against giant kaiju and is the only person in the world proficient with larger weapons. Itami theorized that if Mina had been active ten years ago, the damage from Kaiju No. 6 could have been reduced by two-thirds.

Mina’s incredible might was evident from her very first mission with the Third Division. Director General Isao Shinomiya recognized her power, declaring she was “the missing link” that would change kaiju neutralization forever. Even an enemy like Kaiju No. 9 admires Mina’s strength, wishing to harness it to grow stronger.
