On Christmas Day, 26-year-old YouTube sensation MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, took a significant step in his personal life by proposing to his girlfriend, Thea Booysen. The heartfelt proposal took place at their home, surrounded by family members who were all part of the surprise, making the moment even more special. Known for his extravagant challenges and jaw-dropping stunts on YouTube, MrBeast chose a more intimate and personal approach for his engagement, emphasizing the importance of the occasion.
How MrBeast and Thea Met
MrBeast first crossed paths with Thea Booysen, a fellow gamer and internet personality, in 2022 during a trip to South Africa. Their introduction occurred over dinner with a mutual friend, and the chemistry was immediate as they engaged in lively discussions about science, YouTube, and their mutual passion for learning. The couple made their red carpet debut at the Kids’ Choice Awards in April 2022, where Booysen later described the experience as an “amazing night” on Instagram.
The Proposal Plan
In the year leading up to the proposal, MrBeast shared his intentions with Booysen. Before she left for the United Kingdom to pursue her master’s degree, he inquired about the ideal moment for a proposal, to which she replied it should happen after her graduation. True to his word, MrBeast popped the question just one month after Booysen earned her master’s degree in human cognitive neuropsychology from the University of Edinburgh. In addition to her master’s, Booysen holds a bachelor’s degree in law and an honors degree in psychology.
A Christmas to Remember
Thea Booysen’s family traveled from South Africa to celebrate Christmas with her, MrBeast, and his family. After unwrapping gifts, MrBeast presented one last surprise and asked Booysen to close her eyes. “I was trying to think of the best way to catch her off guard so it would be a surprise,” MrBeast shared with People Magazine. He wanted to include Booysen’s family in this momentous occasion, and Christmas provided the perfect opportunity since they were visiting from the other side of the world.
Plans for a Private Wedding
With over 340 million subscribers since launching his channel in 2012, MrBeast is among the highest-paid content creators globally. However, he plans to keep his wedding day more private, emphasizing the importance of celebrating with close friends and family. “I don’t take many vacations because of how hard I work, so I want to ensure that the wedding is a time to enjoy with her and those we truly cherish,” he told People.
For Booysen, marriage feels like “just a formality” since their bond and dynamic already resemble a married couple’s, especially as they share common views on family and future living arrangements. Like MrBeast, Thea Booysen is also a professional content creator, known online as TheaBeasty. She is an esports commentator and avid gamer who began her gaming career in 2016, streaming card-based video games on platforms such as Twitch and YouTube. Additionally, she co-owns Nixuh, a prominent South African esports organization.
